Prof Ranjan is working as founder Vice Chancellor of D Y Patil International University(DYPIU),

Pune since 2018. He is a Nuclear Fusion Scientist, a Futurist, an Educator, an Innovator and a Science Communicator. He was educated at Netarhat School, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University and Univ. of California, Berkeley where he obtained his PhD in 1986.

For nearly two decades, he has made major contribution to Nuclear Fusion in US(Lawrence Berkeley Lab) and Indian National Labs and was Project Leader of Fusion Reactors. He was also involved in design of in-situ exploration system of Lunar Surface for India’s moon mission.

Prof Ranjan was heading India's Technology Think Tank, TIFAC in Delhi. TIFAC developed Technology Vision 2035 under his leadership, for which Hon’ble PM wrote foreword and launched in Jan 2016. This document has led to many changes across India. He has been invited as futurist at many global forum.

He served as Professor at DA-IICT, Gandhinagar(Gujarat) for 11 years and as Vice Chancellor of DYPIU, Pune for 6 years and has been responsible for many academic innovation that have had major impact. He is also Chairman of an AICTE committee to set up digital fabrication facilities all over India.

He has been innovating throughout his life. In addition to his innovations in scientific research, he has been working to help persons with severe disabilities and old age issues. He is pioneer in the area of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) and represents India at ISO in this sector.

He has served in over 40 national and international level policy making committees covering science, technology, innovation, education, climate change etc. He has authored the chapter “Emerging and Disruptive Technologies” in the book Strategic challenges : India in 2030, published by Harper Collins in Sept 2022. He represented India at IIASA, Vienna and was Vice Chair of its Governing Council from 2015-17.
